Yu Yonghe came to Taiwan to explore sulfur and found all the stones in the river covered with sulfur in the section from Fucheng—the present Tainan City and the former capital of Taiwan , Jhousuei River to Dadu River . Therefore, he called this area Huangsi meaning “rivers filled with sulfur”. In the Japanese Colonial Period, literati in Changhua named this area after Lai He, the Father of Taiwan New Literature. He organized the Huangsi Association and Huangsi was soon associated with literati.
To consolidate the literary spirit in Huangsi, the county government organized the Huangsi Literary Award in 1999. The award aims to promote traditional humanistic spirit, enhance the meaning and value of lives, appeal to the public for human dignity and strive for equal human rights. The award encourages literary creativity, seeks to improve the environment for literary development and a better quality of life in a wealthy, peaceful and happy society.
The Huangsi Literary Award has a Special Contribution Award and Literary Award. Literary Award covers poetry, essay, fiction, and special reports. The submitted articles are graded and selected by outstanding authors and scholars. The examination committees make professional reports on those literary creations in each category and judge their overall quality. A cash prize is also awarded and award-winning masterpieces are later published as books. We hope the promotion of those works could raise the quality of local literature and love for the country. We also hope the Huangsi Literary Award could encourage local authors to write and that there be new writers to help boost literary development in Changhua. |
